What Happens to Donated Items From a Garage Cleanout?

The four destinations

• Donation — Working, usable, and clean items go to local nonprofits, typically the same afternoon. You get a receipt.
• Recycling — Scrap metal, appliances, electronics, cardboard, and clean plastics go to proper recycling facilities.
• Hazardous waste — Paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, and old batteries go to the county household hazardous waste facility. These cannot legally go in a dumpster.
• Landfill — Broken, contaminated, or unusable items only. This is the last option, not the default.

What charities will and won't accept

Charities can only take items that could be sold or used. In practice, that means: yes to furniture in good condition, tools, bikes, sporting goods, small appliances that work, unopened building materials, and toys. No to stained upholstery, cribs and car seats (safety recalls), mattresses in most cases, opened chemicals, and anything mildewed — which garages produce a lot of in North Carolina humidity.

Your donation receipt

We photograph and itemize donated goods and send you the charity's receipt after the drop-off. For a full two-car garage, donated goods commonly total several hundred dollars of deductible value. Keep the receipt with your tax records; we can resend it any time.

Nothing sentimental leaves by accident

Anything ambiguous gets photographed and texted to you before it moves. We would rather send five photos too many than throw out your grandfather's tool box.
