Should I Donate or Throw Away Old Garage Items?

The short answer
Donate anything that is clean, safe, and still works — furniture, tools, sporting goods, bikes, and unopened household supplies are all accepted by Triangle charities. Throw away or recycle anything broken, mold-damaged, expired, or hazardous, since charities cannot legally resell it. A useful rule: if you would give it to a neighbor without apologizing for its condition, donate it; otherwise recycle or dispose of it properly.
The five-pile method
Every garage cleanout and organization job we run sorts into five piles: keep, sell, donate, recycle, and trash. Deciding which pile an item belongs in takes about three seconds once you know the test for each one.

What Triangle charities will not accept
- Paint, solvents, pesticides, and pool chemicals
- Car batteries, motor oil, and propane tanks
- Cribs, car seats, and helmets past their expiration date
- Mattresses and upholstered items with water or mold damage
- Broken appliances and non-working electronics
Don't throw away things worth money
The most common mistake we see is treating a garage cleanout as a dump run. Power tools, vintage collectibles, lawn equipment, and camping gear are often still perfectly usable, and Triangle charities are glad to take them. We sort those out for you and get them donated rather than landfilled.
Hazardous items need a specific drop-off
Wake County runs household hazardous waste facilities that accept paint, chemicals, and batteries free of charge for residents. If you hire us, that trip is already handled — hazardous drop-offs are included in the flat price, not billed as an extra.
