How to Prepare for a Garage Cleanout

The short answer
Preparing for a professional garage cleanout takes about fifteen minutes: move vehicles out of the driveway, set aside anything that absolutely must not leave, unlock the garage and any side doors, and decide what you want the finished garage to do. You do not need to pre-sort, bag anything, or clean — the sorting is the service you're paying for, and pre-sorting often slows the crew down.
The fifteen-minute checklist
- Clear the driveway — we need it as a sorting floor, so park on the street.
- Pull out the untouchables. Anything sentimental or irreplaceable goes inside the house before we arrive.
- Unlock the garage, side door, and any storage closets or attic hatches above the garage.
- Write down three things you want the finished garage to hold. Two cars? A workbench? Sports gear? That drives the layout.
- Have a plan for pets and small kids for the first hour, when the doors are open and gear is moving.
What not to do
Don't pre-sort into piles. It feels helpful, but it fragments the garage and the crew ends up re-handling everything. Don't bag things up either — sealed bags have to be opened and checked anyway. And don't clean; a swept floor is the last step of our day, not the first step of yours.
Decisions worth making in advance
The two questions that genuinely speed up a cleanout: are you keeping the holiday decorations, and is the old furniture going? Those two categories account for a huge share of garage volume, and knowing your answer before 8am saves an hour of standing in the driveway.
